The first step is a visit from a Pure Water Pure Air technician. They run a free basic water test at your tap and show you the results on the spot. Then they explain which problems need treating, in what order, and which filter stages will handle them, before you see a quote.

A private well is yours to look after. No utility treats the water before it reaches your tap. Valley wells often carry more than one problem, such as iron and a sulfur smell, or grit and acidic water. So well treatment is often built in stages, each one handling a single job.

Signs you need well water treatment

Your well water usually tells you what is wrong. Stains, smells and grit each point to a different cause, and each one needs a different fix.

  • Rusty stains on fixtures and laundry most often mean iron in the water.
  • Dark specks or streaks that look like soot are often a sign of manganese.
  • That smell is usually hydrogen sulfide, a gas in the water. It can be worse in hot water.
  • Blue-green marks below faucets point to low pH, or acidic water, that is eating at copper pipe.
  • Sediment from the well can clog aerators, wear out valves and dull the water you drink.
  • If cartridges or shower heads plug up in weeks, something in the water is building up.

How well water treatment works with us

  1. Free in-home water test

We test your well water on site and show you what turned up. Some health questions need a certified lab, and we will say so.
  2. Plan the stages

We work out what to treat and in what order. Sediment first, then iron, sulfur or pH, then softening if needed.
  3. Clear recommendation

We explain each stage, what it removes and why it sits where it does, then give you a quote before you decide.
  4. Install, most in one visit

We fit the tanks and filters near your pressure tank, with bypass valves so each stage can be serviced.

Private Wells in Limestone Country

About half of Rockingham County residents rely on private wells, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension. The Valley is limestone karst: rock full of cracks, sinkholes and caves that water moves through fast. Grand Caverns near Grottoes and Endless Caverns near New Market show what lies under the ground. Water can carry what it picks up a long way.

A Virginia Tech study of Rockingham County well water found the main problems were iron and manganese, hardness, dissolved solids and bacteria. Extension experts say a well can be affected by something in your own yard or something 5 to 10 miles away. Homes around Timberville, Dayton and Singers Glen all draw from this same rock.

  • About half of Rockingham County residents rely on private wells.
  • Karst rock lets water, and what it carries, move fast underground.
  • Iron and manganese top the list in county well water studies.

Common Questions

What is the most common well water problem in Rockingham County?

Iron and manganese lead the list. A Virginia Tech study of Rockingham County well water found the main problems were iron and manganese, hardness, dissolved solids and bacteria. Iron leaves orange-brown stains and manganese leaves black ones. A free in-home test from Pure Water Pure Air shows what your well has.

How do I get rid of the rotten egg smell in my well water near Harrisonburg?

Treat the source, which is usually hydrogen sulfide gas in the water. An air-injection filter is a common fix: it adds air so the sulfur and iron drop out and get trapped in the media. A test first tells you how strong the problem is and which filter fits.

Why does my well water leave blue-green stains?

Blue-green stains usually mean low pH, or acidic water, that is slowly eating at copper pipe. A neutralizer tank raises the pH so the water stops attacking your plumbing. Pure Water Pure Air tests your water at home, then explains whether a neutralizer belongs in your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a line of treatment tanks or filters, each with one job. A typical order is sediment first, then iron, sulfur or pH, then a softener if the water is hard. Putting each stage in the right order keeps the later ones from clogging or wearing out early.

It draws a pocket of air into the top of the tank. As well water passes through, the air turns dissolved iron, manganese and sulfur into solid bits. The media in the tank traps them, and the filter flushes them out on a set schedule. No chemicals are added to your water.

No. Our free basic test is done on site and is not lab-certified. Bacteria, lead and other health questions need a certified lab. The Virginia Household Water Quality Program, run by Virginia Cooperative Extension, offers low-cost well water clinics. If bacteria are found, our UV water purification page explains the fix.

Not on its own in most cases. A softener can handle small amounts of iron, but heavy iron, manganese or sulfur usually need a filter stage before it. Our water softener page covers hardness in detail. The free in-home test shows whether you need both, or just one.

It can. Many well owners notice changes after heavy spring rain or a long dry spell. In karst rock, rain can move from the surface into the ground fast. If your water changes in color, smell or taste, it is a good time to test again.
