Farm Wells Along Route 42

Linville is farm country, spread along Linville Creek north of Harrisonburg. Most rural homes out here use a private well, not a town line. About half of Rockingham County residents rely on private wells, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension. A well is yours to test and treat.

The rock under the Valley is mostly limestone, and water that sits in it picks up minerals. That tends to make well water hard. A Virginia Tech study of Rockingham County well water found the main problems were iron and manganese, hardness, dissolved solids and bacteria.

Hard Water and Your Water Heater

If your kettle has a white crust, your water heater does too. Hard well water leaves scale, a hard, chalky mineral crust. In a tank, it builds up on the bottom and on the heating parts. You may hear rumbling or popping as the tank heats. Over time, scale can shorten the life of the heater.

That is why we do both jobs. We treat the water and we install, replace and repair tank and tankless water heaters. A softener ahead of a new heater helps keep scale out of it. Most installs are finished in a single visit, and you can call us after with questions.

  • Softeners that help protect a new tank or tankless heater
  • Water heater repair for rumbling, leaks or no hot water

Linville water questions

Yes. Our shop is at 7740 Harpine Hwy, on Route 42, and it is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. The entrance and parking are wheelchair accessible. Most water tests happen at your home, though, since we need to see your water where it comes out of the tap.

It is a common complaint on Valley wells. A rotten egg smell usually points to sulfur, a gas some wells pick up from the rock. Iron and manganese are common here too. Our free basic test on site shows what your water carries, and then we explain the options.

For some questions, yes. Our free test is a basic one done at your home. Bacteria, lead and other health tests need a certified lab. The Virginia Household Water Quality Program, run by Virginia Cooperative Extension, holds low-cost well water clinics. We can help you read those results too.
