It starts at your kitchen table. One of our team comes out, runs a free basic water test on site and shows you the results. If a lab has found bacteria in your well, we look at what else is in the water, since a UV light needs clear water to work.

A UV system is a steel tube with a special lamp inside. Water flows past the light on its way to your taps. The light stops germs, such as coliform bacteria, from being able to multiply. It adds no chemicals and does not change the taste.

Signs you need uv water purification

Germs in well water have no taste, smell or color. You often cannot see a problem at all. Watch for these signs.

  • Coliform is a group of bacteria used as a warning sign. It means surface water may be reaching your well.
  • Talk to your doctor first. Then have a certified lab test the well, since bacteria cannot be seen or tasted.
  • Older and shallow wells, or ones with a worn cap, can let rain and runoff seep in more easily.
  • In karst rock, rain can reach a well in a short time. Cloudy water after a storm is worth a look.
  • Farm runoff and septic systems are common sources of bacteria. Valley wells often sit close to both.
  • Most UV units warn you when the lamp is near the end of its life or has stopped working.

How uv water purification works with us

  1. Free basic water test

We test for things that block UV light, such as iron, hardness and cloudy water. Bacteria needs a certified lab, so bring those results if you have them.
  2. Plan the pre-filter

UV only works on clear water. We explain if you need a sediment filter, a softener or iron removal before the light.
  3. Install the system

We mount the UV unit and filter after your pressure tank, so every tap gets treated water. Most installs are done in one visit.
  4. Lamps and sleeves

We show you the alarm and the lamp. Call us for lamp changes, quartz sleeve cleaning and filter swaps, or ask about maintenance plans.

Free In-Home Water Test

What affects the price

We do not quote UV systems over the phone. The price depends on your water, your flow and what has to be fixed before the light. After the free in-home test and a talk about your options, we give you a quote for your home.

Wells in Valley Karst

About half of Rockingham County residents rely on private wells, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension. Much of the valley sits on limestone karst: rock full of cracks, sinkholes and caves. Grand Caverns near Grottoes is one you can visit. Water moves through that rock in a short time, so it gets little natural filtering.

Extension experts note that well germs can come from your own yard, a neighbor's, or from 5 to 10 miles away. A Virginia Tech study of Rockingham County well water listed bacteria among the main problems. Spring rain and snow melt can push more runoff into wells around Timberville, Dayton and Elkton.

  • About half of Rockingham County residents drink private well water.
  • Karst rock lets surface water reach wells in a short time.
  • Spring rain is a good time to retest your well.

Common Questions

Does a UV system work on hard well water in the Shenandoah Valley?

Not on its own. Hard water and iron leave a film on the glass sleeve around the lamp, and the light cannot get through. Many valley wells are hard because they draw from limestone. A softener or iron filter before the UV unit keeps the sleeve clear.

Where can I get my well tested for bacteria near Harrisonburg?

Use a certified lab. Our free in-home test is a basic test, not a lab test, and it does not check for bacteria. The Virginia Household Water Quality Program, run by Virginia Cooperative Extension, holds low-cost well water clinics. Bring the results to us and we will explain your options.

Will a UV light remove iron, sulfur or chemicals from my well?

No. UV only treats germs such as bacteria. It does not remove hardness, iron, sulfur, lead or chemicals, and it does not change the taste. Those need other equipment. That is why we look at the whole water test before we suggest a UV system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most makers suggest a new lamp about once a year, even if it still glows. The light gets weaker over time before it burns out. Your unit's manual has the exact advice. We can change the lamp and clean the quartz sleeve, and you can ask about maintenance plans.

A UV unit needs power to treat water. If the power goes out, water can still flow through without treatment. Some homes add a valve that stops water flow when the lamp is off. Ask us if that suits your home.

Yes. UV treats water as it passes the light, but it cannot tell you what is in your well. Many health experts suggest a lab test for bacteria every year. A certified lab or a Virginia Household Water Quality Program clinic can do this.

We install UV systems on the main line after your pressure tank, so every tap gets treated water. That covers showers, ice makers and the kitchen sink, not just one faucet. Germs that live in the pipes past the unit are a separate issue, so ask us about flushing the lines.

Often yes. A shock treatment kills germs already living in the well and pipes, and UV keeps new ones in check. Virginia Cooperative Extension has guides on how to do it safely. Our team can talk through the order of steps during your free in-home test.
