A Pure Water Pure Air technician visits your home and runs a free basic water test at the kitchen tap. You see the results right there. We explain what a reverse osmosis system would take out of your drinking water, what it will not do, and where the faucet and tank would fit.

Reverse osmosis, or RO, pushes water through a very fine sheet called a membrane. The membrane holds back much of what is dissolved in the water. Clean water fills a small tank under the sink and comes out of its own faucet. It treats the water you drink and cook with, not the whole house.

Signs you need reverse osmosis drinking water systems

Most people look at reverse osmosis because of what they drink, not what they see on fixtures. These are the common reasons.

  • Cases of bottled water add up and take space. An RO faucet gives you filtered water from the sink.
  • A flat, salty or mineral taste often comes from dissolved solids that RO is made to reduce.
  • Minerals in the water you cook and drink with show up as haze and scale.
  • Many people notice drinks taste cleaner when made with lower-mineral water.
  • Pitchers are slow and small. An RO system keeps a tank of water ready under the sink.
  • RO at the kitchen sink lowers the sodium a softener adds to drinking water.

Drinking Water from Valley Limestone

Valley wells mostly draw from limestone and other carbonate rock, which adds minerals to the water. A Virginia Tech study of Rockingham County well water listed dissolved solids among the main problems. RO is made to reduce dissolved solids in the water you drink. Homes around Broadway and Mount Jackson often use private wells.

In Harrisonburg and other towns, homes are often on a public water system that is treated to meet safety standards. Some people still want a different taste for drinking and cooking. RO helps with that. It treats one tap only, so it pairs well with a softener or whole-house filter for the rest of the home.

  • Limestone adds minerals that RO is made to reduce in drinking water.
  • RO treats one tap, so it pairs with whole-house treatment.
  • On a softened home, RO lowers sodium in your drinking water.

Common Questions

Is a reverse osmosis system worth it in Harrisonburg?

For many homes, yes, if you buy bottled water or do not like the taste of your tap water. RO gives you filtered drinking water from its own faucet. Pure Water Pure Air tests your water at home first, so you know what RO would change before you decide.

Does reverse osmosis waste water?

Yes, some. RO sends part of the water to the drain to rinse the membrane while it makes clean water. That is normal for how it works. Because it only treats drinking and cooking water at one sink, the total use stays modest for most homes. Ask us about it.

Can I use reverse osmosis on well water in the Shenandoah Valley?

Yes, but well water often needs other treatment first. Heavy iron, hardness or sediment can foul the RO membrane. A sediment filter or softener ahead of it protects the system. If your well may have bacteria, test it at a certified lab, since RO is not a substitute for UV.

Frequently Asked Questions

It sits on the sink or countertop, beside your main faucet. If your sink has a spare hole, such as one for a sprayer or soap pump, we can often use it. If not, a new hole may be needed. Our technician looks at your sink during the free in-home visit.

RO systems have filters that need changing on a schedule, and a membrane that lasts longer. How often depends on the system, your water and how much you use. We explain the schedule when we install it, and you can ask about maintenance plans for filter changes.

Often, yes. An RO system can usually be tied into a fridge water line or ice maker, so ice and cold water come from the same filtered supply. It depends on the distance from the sink and the route for the line. Ask our technician during the in-home visit.

Most people say it tastes clean and crisp. RO removes many dissolved minerals, so the flat or salty taste some water has tends to go away. Coffee, tea and ice can taste different too. If you are used to well water, the change can be easy to notice.

No. RO treats drinking and cooking water at one sink. A whole-house filter treats all the water entering the home, mainly for grit and chlorine taste. Our whole-house water filtration page covers that. Many homes use both, each doing the job it is built for.
