It starts at your kitchen sink. One of our team comes to your home and runs a free basic water test on site, so you see how hard your water is while we are there. We explain what the result means, then suggest a softener sized for your home and how much water you use.

Hard water means water with a lot of calcium and magnesium in it. They are not a health risk, but they leave scale: a hard, chalky crust on fixtures, in pipes and inside your water heater. A softener swaps those minerals out before the water reaches your taps.

Signs you need water softener installation

Hard water shows up in small ways long before it does real harm. If you see two or three of these, a softener is worth a look.

  • Spots that come back after every wash are mineral left behind as the water dries.
  • Scale builds up on spouts and clogs shower heads, so the spray gets weak.
  • Hard water fights soap. You use more of it and still get thin suds and a film in the tub.
  • Many people notice skin feels tight and hair feels coated. Soap scum that stays on you is often the cause.
  • Minerals stay in the fabric, so towels feel rough.
  • Scale settles in the bottom of the tank. It can make popping sounds and leave less room for hot water.

Hard Water on Valley Limestone

Much of the Shenandoah Valley sits on limestone and other carbonate rock. Water that moves through that rock picks up minerals, so well water here tends to be hard. About half of Rockingham County residents rely on private wells, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension. That covers many homes around Linville, Broadway and Timberville.

Town water is treated to meet safety standards, but hardness is not a safety issue, so homes in Harrisonburg and Bridgewater can still see scale. The water heater feels it most. Scale coats heating parts and settles in the tank, and it can clog a tankless heater. A softener slows that buildup.

  • Valley wells mostly draw from limestone, which tends to make water hard.
  • Town and city water can still leave scale, since hardness is not a safety issue.
  • Soft water helps protect tank and tankless water heaters from scale.

Common Questions

Do I need a water softener in Harrisonburg if I am on city water?

You might. City water is treated to be safe, but hardness is not a safety issue, so it can still leave scale. If you see spots, crusty faucets or a noisy water heater, a test will tell you. Pure Water Pure Air runs a free basic water test in your home.

Why is well water so hard in Rockingham County?

Most Valley wells draw from limestone and other carbonate rock, and that rock adds calcium and magnesium to the water. A Virginia Tech study of Rockingham County well water listed hardness among the main problems. A softener removes those minerals before the water reaches your taps and your water heater.

Can a water softener help my water heater last longer?

It can help. Hard water leaves scale that coats heating parts and settles in the bottom of the tank, which wears a water heater out sooner. In tankless heaters, scale can clog the heat exchanger. Soft water slows that buildup, which is why we install both softeners and water heaters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water flows through a tank of small resin beads. The beads grab calcium and magnesium and give off a small amount of sodium in their place. Every so often the softener rinses the beads with salty water from the brine tank, so they are ready to work again. That rinse is called regeneration.

A softener adds a small amount of sodium as it removes hardness. How much depends on how hard your water was. If you want less sodium, ask about a reverse osmosis system for drinking water at the kitchen sink, or a cold line that skips the softener.

It depends on how hard your water is, how much you use and the size of your brine tank. Most homes check the tank every few weeks and top it up when it runs low. Ask us about salt when we install your softener, and we will show you what to look for.

A softener handles hardness. Iron, manganese and sulfur often need their own filter stage, set before the softener. Our free in-home test shows what is in your water, so we can tell you whether a softener alone will do or whether you need well water treatment too.

We are an authorized Hague Quality Water dealer and an A.O. Smith Specialized Water Solutions dealer, and we install softeners from both lines. We explain which models fit your test results, your household and your space, before you decide.
