Start with a call. Tell us the brand and what the system is doing, and we will tell you if we can service it. On the visit we check the control valve, the brine tank and the media, and run a free basic water test to see if the system is doing its job.

A softener or filter works hard every day. Valley water is full of hardness and iron, and that wears on valves, media and seals. Most systems give warning signs before they quit. A service visit can often bring a tired system back, and tell you when it is time to replace it.

Signs you need water softener & filter repair and maintenance

Your system may still look fine from the outside. Watch for these signs at the tap and at the brine tank.

  • If white crust returns to faucets and glass doors, the softener may not be regenerating or the resin may be worn.
  • A full brine tank week after week can mean a salt bridge, a hard crust that stops salt from dissolving.
  • A little water is normal. A tank full of water can point to a clogged line or a stuck valve.
  • On a well filter, these mean the media may be spent or the system is not backwashing as it should.
  • A clogged cartridge or packed media bed can choke the flow to every tap.
  • After a power outage, the clock may be off and the system may regenerate at the wrong hour.
  • Constant draining or a grinding sound from the valve often means a part inside is worn.

If your softener or filter is acting up, call us about repair and maintenance, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Call (540) 830-7963

Valley Water Wears Systems Down

Valley wells mostly draw from limestone, which makes water hard. A Virginia Tech study of Rockingham County well water found iron, manganese and hardness among the main problems. All of that passes through your softener or filter every day. Media wears out, valves gum up and cartridges fill, often sooner than the box suggests.

Town water in Broadway or Timberville is treated to meet safety standards, but hardness is not a safety issue, so it can still scale a softener valve. On farms around Dayton and Mount Jackson, iron and sediment can load filters in a short time in spring, when rain and snow melt stir up the well.

  • Hard limestone water puts strain on softeners and valves every day.
  • Iron and sediment can foul well filters in wet spring months.
  • Town water can still leave scale inside a softener.

Common Questions

Who repairs water softeners near Harrisonburg if you did not install mine?

Call us and tell us the brand. We will tell you if we can service it. Pure Water Pure Air works from Linville, just north of Harrisonburg, and services softeners and filters across the Shenandoah Valley. We do not promise to fix every make, so we check first.

How do I know if my softener resin needs to be replaced?

Hard water returns even though salt is being used and the system regenerates on time. Resin can also break down from chlorine or iron. A basic water test on the softened water tells you. If hardness is getting through, the resin or the valve needs a closer look.

Why is my softener using no salt in Rockingham County?

The most common cause is a salt bridge, a hard crust near the top of the brine tank. Salt sits on it but never reaches the water. Push gently with a broom handle to break it. If salt still does not drop, the valve or brine line may be the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your water and your system. Hard well water with iron wears parts sooner than town water. Many homeowners have the system checked once a year. Ask us about maintenance plans, and we can suggest a schedule after we see your system and test your water.

Most softeners work with clean pellet or crystal salt. Some homes with iron in the water use salt with an iron cleaner added. Your system's manual is the place to start. Ask us about salt and we can tell you what suits your system and water.

It depends on the cartridge and how much sediment or chlorine is in your water. Well water with a lot of sediment can fill a cartridge in a short time. A drop in water pressure is a common sign. We can change cartridges and tell you what to stock.

Sometimes. A new valve part or fresh resin can bring a sound tank back. If the tank is cracked, parts are hard to get or the system no longer fits your water, a new one may make more sense. We explain both paths so you can choose.

Yes. Most softeners have a bypass valve or handles on the pipes. Turn them to bypass and untreated water goes to your taps while the system is off. If you are not sure which way to turn them, call us and we can talk you through it.
